When I am revising a paper of mine, I have a certain approach that is consistent in my writing but is evident in my essay titled, “An Analysis of the Internet’s Effect on Society.” My approach is comparable to a selection from Nancy Sommers, “Revision Strategies of Student Writers and Experienced Adult Writers.” When I wrote this paper, I based my first draft off of an outline that I have previously created. This outline is the foundation of my writing covering only the main points and quotations I plan to include. During this paper, I realized that my outline did not cover the exact point I was trying to make in my thesis so I reworded my thesis and changed my outline. My outline is where I focus on global revision, fitting the points I want to make in a logical order. From this outline, I then proceeded to write my first draft, making sure to cover my main points. This is similar to Sommers when she talks about a writer who keeps writing a first draft until that writer has figured out what to say. I figured out what I was going to say within my outline and then connected the parts in my first draft. Sommers’ philosophy of writing is that writing is a recursive process. I agree with her in that when writing my second and final drafts, I was constantly looking back at my work to proofread and find errors in my writing. It resulted in me finding multiple sentence structure errors within my first draft. In my second draft I mainly focused on finding grammatical errors within my writing. When I wanted to change something, I would read the sentence aloud to myself. First the way it was previously written and then the way I would change it too. If the second way sounded better and still fit with the rest of the paper, I would change it. If it did not sound good or sounded good but did not flow with the rest of the paper, I left the sentence how it was and would try to find another way to word it. In conclusion, Sommers has a great philosophy in that writing is a recursive process and I believe that my philosophy of revision is similar to what she believes.
