A flash mob is when a large group of people come together, through means of social media, in a public area to perform a specific act and then quickly disperse. One may question what motivates so many people to join this act. I personally believe people join because of conformity. It would be awkward if only a few people tried to pull off a flash mob and would end up being called weird. However, when a large enough group of people do it, you are able to fit in with a large enough crowd where one does not feel out of place performing such an act. There are also upsides to a flash mob once you look past the negative of it interfering with normal civilian’s lives. It gives people something to do and feel a part of similar to a club or team. More recently flash mobs have been used to spread awareness and people are able to benefit. Alphabet Photography, a company out of Ontario, used a flash mob that involved singing Christmas carols at a food court to increase people’s awareness about their company and it resulted in them going viral. Flash mobs have become so popular because they can be a fun social gathering and they are able to bring people together with the possibility of becoming internet famous.
